Does Anyone Use Press Releases These Days?

Make sure to bring your dancing shoes.

Hey everybody! More than Me is having our Holiday Fundraiser this weekend. It is going to be an event with something for everyone. We are nearing the height of Christmas Party season and we all have places to be and people to see. That said, if you are in D.C., stop by and check out one of our four music acts, buy a raffle ticket, and say hello. If you aren’t in D.C., there is still time to buy a bus ticket. Well, okay, that might be a bit much, but we will be posting a post-party, er, fundraiser wrap-up after the event.

Go to the Facebook invite to RSVP.

Here is the press release I sent out to publicize the event. I’m not sure how effective releases like this are these days, but I thought I would share because it is informative and, personally, it’s nice to think that at least someone read it. If you have any insight into whether or not the press release as a medium is useful let us know in the comments.

Hope to see you Saturday night!

More Than Just a Holiday Fundraiser
Nonprofit to Host Scholarship Fundraiser Featuring Live Music and Raffle Prizes

The More than Me Foundation, a DC-based nonprofit focusing on education and global awareness, is hosting “More than Just a Holiday Fundraiser” at Bobby Lew’s Saloon in Adams Morgan, on December 11th from 8PM-12AM. This event is the capstone of More than Me’s holiday fundraising campaign, and will feature four live bands and raffle prizes, including a free drum lesson, a segue tour for two, and gift certificates. All proceeds from the evening will go toward tuition and school supplies for children in Liberia.

“More than Just a Holiday Fundraiser” will feature live music from Duke Ellington School of the Arts graduate and Wammie-award winning artist Margot MacDonald; DC-based “classic country” band The Human Country Jukebox; spandex-clad, 80s cover-band Hair Raid; and the soulful reggae sounds of Zak Reggae. The event is free and open to the public. Donations of $5-10 are encouraged. More than Me sent 31 children to school in September. Proceeds from this event will help continue the scholarship recipients’ education and send more children to school.

Liberia has the second lowest per capita income in the world, and for most families survival takes priority over education. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said, “All the children I meet, when I ask them what they want most, they say, ‘I want to learn, I want to go to school, I want an education.’” More than Me believes that with an education, children have a better chance of preventing disease, increasing life expectancy, and reaching their potential. The group hopes that this event will help raise awareness of the need for childhood education in Liberia and around the world.

More than Me, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was formed in 2009 after founder Katie Meyler returned from war-torn Liberia determined that one person with enough drive can make a difference. Meyler now speaks to schools and organizations about how to “be the change” they want to see in the world. She founded More than Me to increase access to education for children abroad and raise global awareness here in the US. As the Liberian government recuperates from the debt created by a brutal civil war, its funding is not enough to support education for all Liberian children. “Sixty-one percent of children where we work in West Point, Monrovia are out of school, and the money we raise with this event will help them to achieve their dream of being able to read and write for the first time,” Meyler said.

Bobby Lew’s Saloon is located at 2006 18th Street NW, Washington, DC. The closest Metro stops are on the Red Line (Dupont Circle) or the Green and Yellow Lines (U Street/Cardozo/African American Civil War Memorial).
